Repair Electrical Power Distribution System at Eareckson Air Station, AK

ECC is executing repairs and upgrades to the primary electrical distribution system for Eareckson Air Station located on Shemya Island, Alaska. Eareckson Air Station is a remote island near the western tip of the Alaskan Aleutian Islands, approximately 1,500 miles southwest of Anchorage, AK that is operated by the 611th Civil Engineering Squadron (CES) out of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Under the project, ECC is removing 19 out-of-service transformers; replacing 36 transformers and 44 cable junction pedestals; replacing approximately 6 miles of degraded sections of underground 15kV cable; and upgrading cross-connection capabilities by installing nine pad-mounted switches with remote control and monitoring via supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA). Proper planning, scheduling, and logistics are paramount on this project, as harsh weather conditions limit the outdoor working season, and everything needed to execute the project (material, equipment, vehicles, supplies, etc.) must be shipped by barge to the island.
